This month I will give you a little insight into the history and character of NOG, one of our oldest reindeer.
The dictionary explanation of Reindeer (plural reindeers) :- A deer of the tundra subarctic regions of Eurasia and North America. Both sexes of which have large branching antlers. Most Eurasion reindeer are domesticated and used for drawing sledges, as a source of milk, flesh and hide. Called Caribou in North America.
The madness of Christmas is behind us and now the job of pulling it all together begins...................
This month is all about getting the trees into the "right" shape and making sure the plantations are weed free. Hans and Paul have been out on the tractor cutting the weeds down and Kristien has been brush cutting in the plantation next to the retail area.
This is the month for "leader reduction". A special solution is rollered on to the very top part of the Christmas Trees to stop them becoming too long. Noone likes the star at the top of their tree to be miles away from the rest of the decorations!
See the work being done at the farm in May. They are levelling out the roads, bird sticks are going up, our trees are starting to "flush"............
April is a very busy month in the Christmas tree growing calendar. This is the month when the new trees are planted. Other jobs in April include fencing and preparation of new plantations and fertilising our established trees.
March at Santa Fir is a very busy month for the boys as they are looking for new land and preparing this and some of our current plantations ready for planting.
Storm Doris didn't last long but she certainly left her impression on Santa Fir
